Genre: Mystery / Psychological Thriller
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lisa Jewell’s Then She Was Gone is one of those books that leaves you staring at a wall long after you’ve turned the final page. It’s dark, twisted, emotionally heavy — and honestly, unlike anything I’ve read before.
The story follows Laurel, a mother whose teenage daughter vanished ten years ago. In the present day, clues about the disappearance of her daughter began resurfacing, pulling Laurel slowly back into a past she never got answers for. From here on, the story slowly uncovers the truth, each reveal hitting harder than the last, and as shocking as it is unforgettable.
One thing I absolutely loved was the writing style. Jewell’s pacing, her emotional detailing, and the way she maintains the tension throughout kept me hooked from start to finish. It’s haunting, intense, and honestly, brilliantly written. By the time everything comes together, it’s impossible not to look back and reanalyse the story with a completely different perspective.
Just be prepared: it’s dark, disturbing, and it will linger in your mind long after you finish it.
